Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach has been suspended from coaching, apparently due to the complaints of a player's family. Adam James, of Texas Tech, and his family were unhappy with the treatment provided by the Texas Tech coach after the player suffered a concussion during a scrimmage on Dec 16th.
What is a concussion?
A concussion occurs when there is injury to the brain after trauma, such as a blow to the head. A concussion can be either mild or severe. Mild concussions may not result in loss of consciousness, but can result in dizziness. Severe concussions cause the injured person to lose consciousness for a longer period of time, and may require a longer recovery time.
Proper treatment for concussion
If the concussion is mild, home care may be appropriate, with a doctor's evaluation. A serious concussion, evidenced by loss of consciousness, vomiting, confusion, drowsiness, weakness, loss of memory, or any other cognitive symptoms, should be treated with emergency medical care.
Concussion Tests
Typically, after determining the cause of the concussion, doctors may perform a neurological exam. Checking balance, reaction time, memory, vision, and other abilities helps the doctor determine whether the concussion has affected brain function. Doctors will also typically order a CT scan to check for damage to the brain.
